About Bio-electromagnetic Therapy

Charge  is one of the universe’s fundamental powers.  Positive or negative, it determines the structure of atoms and molecules and how they interact.  It has been applied  medicinally for thousands of years.  With the advent of electricity, our ability to generate and control strong electromagnetic fields and to use them to diagnose and treat has expanded many-fold.

Bio-electromagnetic Therapy is the application of electromagnetic fields to treat  and prevent disease and promote health and wellbeing. Although Bio-electromagnetic Therapy may be new to many Americans, it has been studied systematically for over 40 years.  Thousands of studies  have been performed, and is already standard practice in Eastern Europe in the countries of the former Soviet Union.

How important is bio-electromagnetic therapy?  In 1992 Dr. Andrew Bassett, who worked tirelessly to advance bio-electromagnetic therapy and helped achieve the first FDA clearance to treat non-union fractures, wrote:

“In the decade to come bioelectromagnetics will assume a therapeutic importance equal to, or greater than, that of  pharmacology and surgery today. With proper interdisciplinary effort, significant inroads can be made in controlling the ravages of cancer, some forms of heart disease, arthritis, hormonal disorders, and neurological scourges such as Alzheimer’s disease, spinal cord injury, and multiple sclerosis.  This prediction is not pie-in-the-sky.  Pilot studies and biological mechanisms already described in primordial terms, form a rational basis for such a statement.

Since all chemical, biological and molecular interactions are fundamentally electromagnetic, an externally applied electromagnetic field might be expected to have profound biological effects at many levels.  Bio-electromagnetic therapy has been documented to increase energy (ATP production) and availability of oxygen, enhance transport of ions (calcium, potassium, sodium) across cell membranes, improve circulation, induce sleep, alleviate pain and reduce stress. There is speculation that regular bio-electromagnetic treatment may increase longevity and quality of life.

Electromagnetic fields pass through the body as if it were transparent, inducing electrical currents which are believed to account for many of their biological effects.  Bio-electromagnetic and laser therapies are frequently combined clinically and in research and have been documented to enhance the effects of another in many conditions.
